School Visits & Events

I love connecting with kids and adults about children’s books and writing. My presentations celebrate creativity and the power of our imagination, and I often touch on themes of perseverance and the importance of revision. I also love to share about my research process and cool things I learned while writing my books. If you’d like me to lead a writing workshop, I’m up for that too! My writing workshops can be adapted to work for different grades or to focus on a specific aspect of writing (Ie. dialogue, setting, characters, plot).

SCHOOL VISIT RATES

Full-Day Visit: $2,000 plus travel expenses

Includes up to 3 of your choice: Assembly presentation for Grades 3 and up, small-group writing workshop (ideal for Grades 5 and up), or story time and book chat for PreK-2. Optional add-ons at no cost: Q&A lunch with a small group of students and book signing.

An additional assembly presentation or writing workshop and up can be added for $400. Story time and book chat for Pre-k-2 can be added for $200.

Full-Day Visits can be split between nearby schools on the same day (note: lunch is not included with this option, schools must be within a 10-minute drive from each other)

Half-Day Visit: $600 per assembly presentation/writing workshop (60-minute max); $300 for story time and book chat for Pre-K-2 (30-minute max)

Maximum of 2. Can mix-and-match between assembly presentation for Grades 3 and up, small-group writing workshop, and story time and book chat for grades PreK-2. Available only to schools in Colorado or California within a 30-minute drive of the 80516 or 94040 zip codes.

Virtual Visits

For a presentation/Q&A about one of my middle-grade novels, (approx. 30-45 minute): $300

For a story time reading of my picture book and Q&A (approx. 20 minutes) $100

I also occasionally offer free school visits in coordination with independent bookstores like Boulder Bookstore, Composition Books, Linden Tree, and Books Inc. during a book tour or free virtual visits for events like World Read Aloud Day. The best way to stay informed about these opportunities is to subscribe to my newsletter.

Additionally, when I have a new book launching, my publishers will occasionally sponsor me for a book tour. If you’d like me to visit your area, reach out to your local independent bookstore or library and let them know. They might be able to coordinate with my publisher to send me your way. You can also contact me, and I will make note of the info for myself—who knows? I might be traveling to your area for another reason and can plan a bookstore or library visit while I’m there.

Speaking Events

I’m also available to speak at educator or writer conferences and book festivals, and am always happy to collaborate with other authors for a panel presentation.

Some of the organizations I’ve presented or spoken at are: National Council of Teachers of English, American Library Association, Colorado Council of the International Reading Association, Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, the Children’s Literature Festival at Truman State University, University of South Florida, and Stanford University.
